Project Overview
This picturesque building was built on a peninsula between an upper skating pond and a lower trout pond, separated by a stream and waterfall. The building’s purpose is to serve as a warming hut for children skating on the pond in winter, but it also provides a seasonal gathering spot for family and friends passing through the surrounding gardens during milder seasons. The Warming Hut draws materials together from around the globe — heavily checked fir beams from a dismantled munitions factory in Minnesota, an interior limestone mantel from Hungary, an exterior granite mantel and chimney cap from China, granite boulders from New Hampshire, and a winged bronze dragon whose tail morphs into a long rail surrounding the terrace. Articles about this project appeared in Banker & Tradesman in 2007 and New England Home in 2008.
Hear from the Builder
“There is no established formula for conceiving and creating a beautiful building. There is no question that the Warming Hut evokes wonder and delight on the part of many who have seen it. For them it is a work of art, a composition in wood and stone that has a transcendent quality of beauty.”
